Airport Completes Phase 1 of Taxiway Alpha Project

SIOUX CITY, IA – Glenn Januska, Director of the Sioux Gateway Airport/Col. Bud Day Field, announced today the completion of the Taxiway Alpha project phase 1.  The construction was required to accommodate the conversion from the Iowa Air National Guard’s F-16 fighter aircraft to the KC-135 air refuelers.  The $4.3 million dollar project, funded by the National Guard, reconstructed an existing 1,900 foot long by 50 foot wide section of Taxiway Alpha, widening it to 75 feet and increasing the pavement section from 12” of concrete to 15” of concrete over a 14” base and 6” subgrade.  The project also included construction of a new section of Taxiway Alpha providing for the first time a full length parallel taxiway to Runway 13/31.

“We’re very happy to have this first phase of the Taxiway Alpha project completed,” said Januska.  “The two sections of taxiway included with this project were the two key pavement sections that needed to be addressed to allow the KC-135s to begin flying out of the Airport.” The next phase of the project is to be funded with $2 million dollars from the Military Construction (MILCON) appropriations bill currently in conference committee.
