Airport Produces $69 Million in Annual Economic ImpactResponsible for 830 jobs

SIOUX CITY, IA - Glenn S. Januska, A.A.E., Sioux Gateway Airport Director announced the results of an Air Transportation Economic Assessment prepared for the Iowa Department of Transportation.  The economic assessment, conducted by Iowa State University, found that in 1999 the Airport produced in Woodbury County $41.7 million in industrial output, requiring $11.9 million in purchases from local suppliers.  The local air transportation industry paid $14.98 million in personal income, generated $21.1 million in direct value added, and accounted for 450 jobs.  When these dollars and jobs are worked through the local economy, the results are: $69.0 million in total industrial output; $24.5 million in total personal income; $37.2 million in value added; and a total of 830 jobs supported.

“I don’t think many people really understand the substantial impact the Airport has on the local economy,” said Januska.  “Most people probably think about the Airport only when they are scheduling a trip or picking up a relative from a flight.  The air transportation industry is, and will continue to be, one of the key drivers in the local economy.” “When you consider the importance of an airport in attracting business and industry to an area, the economic impact of those companies would dwarf the $69 million dollar figure,” Januska said.
